THE music industry has finally taken a major step to win back disgruntled fans by removing copy protection software which stopped them downloading songs to the MP3 player of their choice.

EMI announced yesterday it would offer fans better-quality downloads - for a higher price - which would be free of digital rights management (DRM) restrictions.

Introduced to curb piracy, the DRM coding enraged music lovers because it stopped many users from listening to tracks they bought online on their favourite devices.

With current legal downloads, any song with DRM purchased from the iTunes shop can only be played on Apple's iPod and copied and burned a handful of times.

EMI announced iTunes shops will be the first to offer tracks by Silverchair, Missy Higgins, Coldplay, the Rolling Stones and Norah Jones. Bigpond confirmed it is now in negotiations to offer the DRM-free tracks.

The British multinational decided to offer fans their choice of downloads after a survey of digital consumers found 84 per cent said it was important to be able to transfer files between devices.
